Flag work: Today's job is to watch this excellent Lollapalooza livestream
Prepare to procrastinate, because it's going to be a goodie ...
Right now, tens of thousands of people should be gathered in Grant Park, Chicago’s massive, central city wonderland that’s home to a really impressive fountain, several nicely manicured gardens, and some gentle waterfront walks.
They should be there, messing up the gardens, cooling off in the fountain and generally getting raucous while celebrating the 2020 edition of Lollapalooza, the annual four-day music event that has become one of the biggest and best festies around.
I’ve been, and I remember it being the most chilled out concert I’ve ever been to. No police, no fights, just good times. At the end of the night, fans would cheer in unison while walking home through the city, and their chants would ring off the skyscrapers and echo down streets.
The year I went, I saw Kings of Leon, Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg, Santigold and TV on the Radio. Sadly, I chose to watch Tool for the umpteenth time over the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who were a last-minute replacement for The Beastie Boys.
I’ve never seen Karen O and co live, and I’ve regretted it ever since.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were supposed to be headlining this year’s event, which, like every other major music festival except those being held in New Zealand, has been cancelled. Boo.
But all is not lost! Like Coachella, Rolling Loud and many other major festies, Lollapalooza usually livestreams its main stage acts for the rest of the world to see.
It’s not as good as being there, but it’s usually pretty damn good, and the time difference means you can have it cranking throughout the day. This time, they’re still doing it, and have organised many of their headliners to play socially distanced, at-home, acoustic sets via Zoom, and mixed in a few faves.
If you haven’t been watching, it’s been pretty great. Josh Homme played an acoustic set of Them Crooked Vultures songs. Jane’s Addiction reunited. Chris Cornell’s daughter covered Pearl Jam’s best song, Black. There have been full sets from previous headliners Metallica, Outkast, Lorde and Tyler, the Creator to enjoy.
It’s been pretty great! And guess what - it’s not over! In fact, Lolla’s saved the best for last. Kicking off from 10am (NZ time) today you can see sets by Future, Arcade Fire, The Weeknd, Khalid and A$AP Rocky.
Best of all, it’s all starting with that set that I missed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs back in 2009. This time, I’m definitely tuning in. Let’s face it, there’s not going to be another chance to see them for a good long while.
