I'm all in on Stray, Playstation's video game about a dystopian cat
In a world full of cats, here's one to rule them all.
One meow. That’s all it took for me to fall in love with whatever the hell Stray is, the feline futuristic fantasy world unveiled during Playstation’s big reveal this morning.
Delayed by a week due to the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests being held across America, the online-only gaming event showcased what we can all expect from the Playstation 5 console’s release sometime next year.
Some of it was really cool. The new instalment of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart feels fast, frenetic and furious, Returnal appears to have captured some of Brad Pitt’s Ad Astra solo space vibe, Death Loop still looks like insane Tarantino-esque fun and I’m there for throwback platform puzzler Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
Some of it was a little questionable. Giving Grand Theft Auto V a fresh lick of paint seems weird when the admittedly very good game first debuted on the Playstation 3. Some of these games they’re showing off won’t be available when the Playstation 5 comes out later this year. Pragmata isn’t even out until 2022.
But then the trailer for Stray came on, and it immediately made up for all that. Trust a cat to sort things out. Stray really made me swoon.
Stray just looks purr-fect. (Sorry!)
I love those glum ‘bots. I love that they get oiled and lubed in front of a mirror, the same way humans gets haircuts. I love the sad looks on their digital faces. I love the neon hum of the dystopian city Stray is set in.
Most of all, I love that damn cat. What is it up to? What’s that little flying ‘bot buddy doing? Does the kitty have a mission, or does it just roam around licking empty tuna cans while getting cuddles from depressed homeless robots?
That’s the big question: can we pet it, cuddle it, stroke it’s furry little ears and make it purr?
I don’t the answer, but I want to play Stray, and I want to play it now. My son feels the same way. As the trailer came to a close with that resonating meow, he declared: “Oh my god - if you’re playing as the cat I’m so there for that.”
Couldn’t have put it better myself.
Meow.
