Three songs to soundtrack your lazy Sunday
Stop what you're doing and get to know these local anthems immediately.
Hello! If you’ve got nothing better to do today, and it’s a Sunday, so you really shouldn’t have made too many plans, I thoroughly recommend wrapping your ears around these tunes.
They’re all local, all good, and all worth your time …
Deryk - Call You Out
We don’t know much about this mysterious local singer yet, but there’s a deep dive on The Spinoff that pitches deryk as the next Lorde and details the buzz around her. That’s a big ask but this is a great first step, a Portishead-meets-Fiona Apple slice of brooding balladeering menace with some warped visuals. An EP is coming, so we should know more soon.
The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers
The Auckland four-piece released their second album on Friday, and it quickly moved The Beths from ‘Auckland’s best rock band’ to ‘New Zealand’s best rock band’. They make it all look so easy, and while much of Jump Rope Gazers is more amplified than their debut, this indie-pop anthem is a delicious slice of summer pie. Also, the album’s release meant this tweet happened, and it’s just too Kiwi for words.
Team Dynamite - Dragon Fruit
This just screams hammocks and Coronas and sand and beach towels and sunsets and sunglasses and wet togs hanging on the clothes line and sausages on the BBQ and the smell of sunscreen and kids toasting marshmallows on the fire. Shame it’s winter, but it’s a timely reminder that it might only be four degrees outside, but summer isn’t too far away.
