Zach Snyder’s Justice League cut is finally here, there’s a new show from the creators of Netflix’s Money Heist, and a Playstation puzzler will make your brain work overtime. This weekend is going to be busy! Let’s go…
Here’s the question: do you have four hours to spare this weekend? Because that’s how much time Zach Snyder’s Justice League cut will demand of you. Four freaking hours! I’d love to report that this is the Justice League cut to end all cuts, but reviews haven’t been great, and really, when was the last time you saw a four-hour movie that was any good? (Watch it on Neon)
What you really should do instead is begin bingeing all seven episodes of ZeroZeroZero. I raved about this last year at a time when it wasn’t actually available in New Zealand, but now, finally, many months later, it’s here, it’s still good, and you should definitely watch this violent drug-addled bloodbath. (Watch it on Neon)
If you were one of the many millions of people who loved the Netflix series Money Heist, then this will be good news for you. Sky Rojo is another high-octane blast from the same Spanish TV team, this time following three women on the run after they accidentally murder a drug kingpin in a strip club. Sure, why not? (Watch it on Netflix)
I don’t know about you, but Louis Theroux’s excellent BBC podcast Grounded helped me get through many lockdowns over the past 12 months - his bonkers chat with his cousin, Justin Theroux was especially good. Neon is playing his new retrospective Life on the Edge, a kind of fun retrospective of all of the best bits from his interviews over the past 25 years. Holy wow have their been some weird ones. (Watch it on Neon)
If you’ve managed to get your hands on a Playstation 5, it’s definitely worth adding a Playstation Plus subscription into the mix. This month’s free game is Maquette, a weird puzzler that your kids can get involved in. Fall Guys is releasing its spacey fourth season on Monday, but you’ll be too busy at work to play that.
Because of that last Auckland lockdown, the Auckland Arts Festival has extended its run to cram in all of its excellent shows. Yay! That means you can see Estere’s show Into the Belly of Capricorn at the reconfigured Civic Club this Sunday night. Nab your tickets here.
If Justice League wasn’t enough weekend superhero action for you, Disney+ debuts The Falcon and the Winter Soldier tonight, the first episode in a series following a couple more Marvel characters after the events of Avengers: Endgame. (Watch it on Disney+ here)
If you’re heading out to the movies, the five-star Kiwi film Cousins is still in theatres, and so is Frances McDormand’s Oscar-nominated Nomadland. You’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to see Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody though - that’s been delayed until April 1.
If you need some new music to soundtrack your weekend, I’m still cranking the new Mogwai album As the Love Continues, The Horrors have a very loud new EP called Lout out, Fijian rapper Jesswar’s EP Tropixx is full of bangers, and this obscure rapper called Drake has released an EP that seems to be doing okay. I wish he’d cheer up a bit though.
