I saw the film yesterday, and I genuinely regret having given it money. This was never meant to be a tribute to Winehouse's life. Instead, it's a two-hour PR fest to clean up the reputations of those who exploited Amy.
Yeeeep, agreed. If you go read some of the interviews, family members were consulted, visited the set, and met the actors playing them. There's a balancing act film-makers needed to walk there, but you also need to be truthful. It failed completely, imo.
Agree we did not need another Amy movie and definitely not one that does not do justice to the tragic aspects of her life. The press and media have picked over the bones of her turbulent life ad nauseum. They made her life even more difficult, ridiculed her and basically abused her. Now we should just be listening to the glory that was her music and remembering her for that.
I have been listening to Back to Black (the album) since the film disappointed me so much and yep she really was something eh? That voice was incredible and so unique.
I agree with you about the Winehouse documentary, it's completely heartbreaking. Such a waste of a life. Winehouse to my ear is an exceptional and intuitive musician. Such a tragedy.
I recall a scene in the doco where Winehouse is taking a break from the spotlight to recover some sense of well-being, her father takes her to an Island ? where he continues to shove a camera in her face and emotionally abuse her. "Be respectful" he demands, despite neither he nor intrusive fans showing any respect for her privacy or concern for her well-being.
I'll skip this new movie.
Off to Delaney Davidson tonight. Suite Gallery. Cuba Street.
I'm with you on 2016's Amy - a very moving film. I'm sad to hear the biopic has gone down the wrong path entirely :(
PS Nice shout out about Mannequin Pussy - my favourite album of 2024 so far!

(Oh and then there's this five-star review on NZH: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/the-listener/entertainment/amy-winehouse-biopic-back-to-black-is-a-deeply-affecting-forgiving-tribute/OVBC6PIPSVHCVKPSTN265TDJQE/)

Small / intimate space. Can't wait.
I remember that scene too Sarah. Ugh there are few movies I never want to see again; that would be one of them. Enjoy the gig! Should be a great one!
It made me really mad, but I have also seen reviewers giving this five star reviews. Maybe they haven’t bawled on a plane while watching the doco?!?
She had a relationship with boozer and drugged musician Pete Doherty, too.

Interesting I didn’t know that Pete Doherty was still heavily drinking as late as 2019. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7670569/Pete-Doherty-arrested-drunken-bar-fight-celebrated-released-police-cells.html
