This is from a Red Hot and Blue double set of Arthur Russell covers, which also has a Devendra Banhart version of Losing My Taste for the Nightlife that's one of his best performances, and lots of other god remakes. Liam Finn is on it; it's probably the best introduction to Arthur Russell for newbies.
I love how Cults turn Being It into a witchouse dance track, a sound I can't get enough of today that may not even have existed when they recorded it 10 years ago. That new song reminds me of Princess Chelsea, which fits and makes me happy.
I've got to agree, what Princess Chelsea does, in her music and in her persona, is unique, distinctly Kiwi but with international appeal. Alongside P.H.F. and some extreme metal acts I don't really know about, she's over-achieving yet as you say criminally underrated at home.
Why is this? Maybe, off the top of my head, these are outsider acts that still belong to the outsiders, who are a vast and loyal audience globally, and are not easily assimilated by the professional managerial class, because they didn't go to talent school, and they developed their abilities without major label patronage.
I’m not going to prioritise going to Australia for Billie, as I went to the forementioned Swift, McCartney and Alice. anyway because I had to take a big chunk of annual leave, I’m off to Beach Life this weekend as Sting is playing! That’s in LA. I’ve been listening lately.
Billie tends to bury her vocals often-times deep under the music.
Recently I saw Chris Isaak, Hauser and off to James Taylor.
I mean New Zealand tends to get many overseas artists and bands - a version of UB40 without Ali Campbell is coming, as are Pearl Jam and Coldplay. Two-thirds of the overseas touring artists playing seem obscure even with large followings. I mean I Googled Danny Ocean, he’s big in the Latin world but I’d never heard of him till today.
Who are Blonde Redhead playing powerstation, JB Cooper and Eivor (a woman from a Nordic country playing later this year!) Who is 6lack? Though he seems really cool!
We’re spoilt for choice even if I don’t know many of them.
Yes! I have been going to some in Australia, I think I should not have gone to the Swift gig as it was too expensive and a three hour set is tiring.
But after the gigs coming up I’ll go to fewer. I find it good going to all kinds. And I made friends over time with people I met through gigs. guess it’s because I’ve been going to different gigs over time since I started being a Neil Finn/Tim Finn fan when Woodface came out.
Annual leave ends soon and that will be it. I’ll stick to kiwi gigs! Next year maybe I’ll only go to crowded house or something when they come.
We do have a lot of shows, you’re right. I guess I was trying to point out that this seems the start of a pretty worrying trend: artists setting up shop in Oz and expecting us to go to them. My $250 SZA ticket isn’t going to seem so bad if travel and flights and hotels are in the mix too!
Another festival bites the dust- in the US https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/music-midtown-popular-atlanta-music-festival-canceled-year-110035756
Reading into this is sounds like it has more to do with gun laws rather than a flailing festival scene? Or maybe a bit of both…0
After the bad news, good news about King Loser and Cults -: I love their Red Hot and Blue Arthur Russell cover
Lately people have been raving about Snow Strippers and I think "this sounds like Cults" so glad they're back.
I’ve been revisiting their first two albums over the past week - still hold up! Would love to track down the vinyl…

Killer tune! Which album is this from?

I saw Princess Chelsea at the Save the b gig last year for the first time and was transfixed. An absolute star, criminally underrated at home imo.
Will check this out - thanks for the rec!

(Also, are you living the dream life? Just festivals and shows and travel forevermore?!?)

A wonderful life :)

Looks like 6lack has played already.
Footage from concerts inside the sphere are cool - but the sphere is best when it has eyes and looks around the city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo7VGyWT3sc
Also, can you imagine Tool visuals for a concert in the sphere. Insane.
I would be there LIKE A SHOT
